Comparing The Different Types Of Braces
One of the services that we provide at Community Dental Group is braces, or orthodontic appliances that are applied to correct the positioning and spacing of the teeth. There are several types of braces available today and individuals of all ages can benefit from wearing them. However, most of our patients are unsure of the type of braces they should get. So it helps to compare and understand the different types that are being used today.
3 Types Of Braces To Consider
There are 3 types of braces that we provide here at our Thousand Oaks office – traditional metal, ceramic, and Invisalign clear braces. Here is a comparative breakdown:
- Ceramic braces – with the exception of the material used, ceramic braces are similar to the more traditional ones made from metal. However, unlike the latter, ceramic braces typically do not stain your teeth. The downside is that ceramic braces have to be worn for a longer period of time and are considerably more expensive than the metal variety.
- Traditional metal braces – these are the more common, traditional type of braces. They are typically made using stainless steel and have been in use since the 1950’s. Their popularity is attributed to the fact that they are the most cost-effective type of braces in the industry today.
- Invisalign clear braces – unlike ceramic and metal braces, Invisalign clear braces do not use brackets and wires to straighten your teeth. Instead, they are clear plastic aligners that resemble mouth guards in appearance. While ceramic and metal braces must be adjusted every 4 to 6 weeks, Invisalign clear braces are designed as a series of aligners that are switched out approximately every two weeks.
We typically recommend braces if we notice any exaggerated spacing between the teeth or misalignment early on. If these conditions are not corrected, it could lead to more serious problems with the gums and teeth. Unfortunately, most patients do not realize a problem is developing and that is why regular check-ups at Community Dental Group are so important. Please contact us today to make an appointment if you suspect any type of problem with the alignment of your teeth.
