The Many Types Of Dental Floss
Last time you went to the store to get floss, were you overwhelmed by how many different types of floss and flossing devices are available? You are not alone. Let’s break it down so you can find the right one for you.
Unwaxed Floss
Unwaxed floss is the most basic floss that you will find on the market. Usually it is a multifilament piece of thread made from several strands of either nylon or silk twisted together. Nylon floss is the cheapest to produce and also the most common.
Waxed Floss
There really is not much difference between waxed floss and unwaxed floss except for the wax. Waxed floss has a coating on wax on the outside to help it glide through your teeth. Mint floss is also like waxed floss except is has a mint flavor added to the coating. Some people prefer the taste of mint, or say that it makes their mouth feel fresher. It’s really a matter of personal preference.
Flossers
If you have a hard time with regular floss, or if you have teeth that are very close together, you may enjoy dental flossers. These small plastic contraptions make it easy to use the floss without having to get all tangled up. They look like a little “y” shaped piece of plastic with a small piece of floss attached. Dentists agree that these are not as easy to maneuver as regular floss to get the best teeth cleaning possible, but they are still better than nothing.
Water Flossers
The latest in home dental hygiene is what is known as a water flosser. These devices use a stream or pulse of water to remove bacteria and food from between your teeth. Start with your back teeth and let the stream of water flow in the spaces between each of your teeth. Studies have shown that water flossers are up to 51{3b0f9398becb40f4bdd8fe95c600d2c252c33730296b97da1b334948809cb5c4} more effective than regular floss for reducing gingivitis, and up to 29{3b0f9398becb40f4bdd8fe95c600d2c252c33730296b97da1b334948809cb5c4} more effective at removing plaque. But with that said, most dentists still prefer that you floss too because a water flosser cannot get below the gumline like traditional floss.
Most dentists will agree that the best kind of floss is the one that you will actually use. So experiment and try a few different kinds to find the one that works best for you. The more bacteria and debris you can remove from between your teeth, the cleaner your mouth will be. Make sure flossing is a part of your daily oral routine for your best dental health.
