Six Steps Toward Cavity Prevention
Some people are blessed with good teeth. We all know one person who has never had a filling in their life. Though you would never wish poor oral health upon anyone, you might wonder why you can’t have such a good dental fortune!
It’s In Your Genes
Genetics can play a large role in the general health of your teeth. Some people are born with genes that keep their teeth white, others with genes that keep them slightly discolored. Genes also play a part in how susceptible you are to cavities, so even if you practice good hygiene, you might end up in the dentist’s chair for a filling. This doesn’t mean that you should give in to your genes and stop trying, though!
To give your teeth the best shot at staying healthy, try these six dental tips.
6) Brush after meals and snacks. We’ve all heard this one about a million times. But how many people really take it to heart? Take small steps by brushing after dinner, and gradually work up to the others. And with all of the portable options for cleaning teeth away from home, you really have no excuse not to try it.
5) Floss every day. Flossing even just once a day will remove any trapped food particles from between your teeth. Not only will flossing help prevent tooth decay, it can also help freshen your breath, which is always good for everyone around you.
4) Use fluoride. Using a toothpaste with fluoride can strengthen your tooth enamel, which prevents tooth decay. As it is absorbed into your weakened teeth, it bonds to create an even stronger tooth surface than you had before.
3) Chew sugarless gum. Chewing on sugarless gum, especially one with Xylitol, can increase your flow of saliva. This washes away acids from your teeth that can lead to cavities. This is a good habit to get into after meals of you can’t brush.
2) Boost your calcium intake. Studies show that calcium can help re-mineralize your teeth and help in the prevention of cavities. Try snacking on calcium-rich foods such as yogurt and cheese. Cheese has been shown to increase calcium in the mouth after eating it, so say yes to cheddar!
1) Visit your dentist regularly. Having your teeth cleaned professionally every 6-months will keep them healthier than you can imagine as your dentist or hygienist can remove any built-up plaque that can cause cavities. Plus, the dentist can check for any issues that might be on the horizon and get them taken care of before they turn into something bigger.
It may seem like a lot, but taking small steps each day to care for your teeth will keep you smiling bright for many years to come. And who knows, maybe you’ll be the friend who brags about that good dental fortune after all!
