Would You Use Squid Ink At The Dentist’s Office?
Too many Americans forgo the dentist’s office out of fear and don’t realize the harm they’re doing to themselves as a result. Skipping the dentist can lead to a host of serious health problems, which will be much more painful to correct in the long run. If you consider yourself to be one of these individuals, would you consider using a less invasive method to have your gums examined? If so, you may be in luck. Research from the University of California at San Diego has revealed that squid ink could be used to check for gum disease.
How Would It Work?
Currently, dentists use a periodontal probe to measure how much your gums have shrunk. If the squid ink method becomes available to the public, you would rinse your mouth with a solution made of squid liquid, cornstarch, and water. Essentially, the squid ink would then act as a contrasting agent that would be visible via ultrasound. This would allow dentists to measure the pocket depth of every tooth all at once, as opposed to the current method of one tooth at a time.
UCSD nano engineering professor Jesse Jokerst, who came up with the idea after a dinner in Tokyo, said via press release, “The last time I was at the dentist, I realized that the tools that are currently being used to image teeth and gums could use significant updating.”
