3 Post-Operative Tips To Follow While Recovering From Oral Surgery
From the simplest of dental surgical procedures to those that are more complex and tedious, the key to optimal recovery is following the post-operative instructions that your oral surgeon will provide you with. Whether you are fearless of going to the dentist or are a bundle of nerves about it, oral surgery may be the solution that will save your overall health. So it is imperative that you understand how to cope during the healing and recovery period. Here are 3 post-operative tips that we typically offer our patients.
- First and foremost, get sufficient rest so your body will have time to heal – this is always recommended with any type of surgical procedure, especially oral surgery. Keep in mind that participating in your regular activities and returning to your work schedule too soon can hinder the recovery process. So be sure you get sufficient post-operative rest in order to support the healing and recovery process.
- Secondly, your dentist will most likely prescribe painkillers for you – everybody reacts to oral surgery differently. Don’t try to fight your way through any pain and discomfort even if you feel that you don’t need to take the medications as prescribed. After all, how are you going to get sufficient rest and heal properly if the pain keeps you awake throughout the night? On a precautionary note, let your dentist know if you are taking other medications so there are no adverse reactions or side effects to the painkillers.
- Finally, always listen to your dentist and/or oral surgeon – follow your dentist’s instructions to the letter. Remember, they are the experts and you are the patient. When the time comes, he or she will know when it is safe to have you start brushing and flossing again. Be gentle and take it slowly until your mouth gets used to this again. Until your mouth has had enough time to heal, you will probably be rinsing your mouth out with warm saltwater. This will also aid the healing and recovery process.
