Why Would I Need Oral Surgery?
Oral surgery can be used to fix a whole host of problems, such as severely damaged or infected teeth or impacted teeth placing pressure on adjacent teeth in the mouth. When people hear the word “surgery” quite a few anxieties will often arise, but it’s important to remember that oral surgeries are more often than not pretty routine.
An oral surgery may call for general anesthetic or local anesthetic, and it will depend on the surgery at hand. A root canal procedure is often considered an oral surgery, but this is one that will require only a local anesthetic and allow you to be awake during your entire visit. If you have a severely impacted tooth, however, a general anesthetic may be necessary due to the complexity and requirements associated with the procedure.
If you do require an oral surgery for any reason that calls for a general anesthetic, it’s important to remember to have a friend or relative with you who can drive you to and from your visit. With general anesthetic, you will be too groggy to drive safely after the procedure has been completed, and having a means of transportation available can allow you to get home safely so you can recover. If you should need an oral surgery requiring general anesthesia, it’s also important to follow any rules or regulations set out by your dentist leading up to and following the visit. Your dentist will provide you with all of the information you need to have a safe and successful procedure, which is just what you want for the easiest and most pain-free surgery and recovery process possible!
Oral surgery is nothing to fear as long as your dentist’s recommendations and instructions are followed, and it can really provide a solution for a whole variety of different dental problems or concerns. At Community Dental Group, we want to take the fear away from oral surgery, and to ensure our patients that their procedure will be something they’re glad they did when all is said and done!
